Another day, watching someone’s disaster on the television news
It’s always been there kind of creeping up like a long slow burning fuse
Quite a shock to contemplate that it might actually be true
Before I’m lost again in all those pressing things I’ve gotta do
Because this is the only world we’ve got, can’t you see?
And no one can tell now what will be
Through my car window, can’t point no fingers at the world and his wife
Just another Joe, just another sleepwalker getting on with life
You know I’ve got to deal with all the grinding things the long day brings
Then sometimes it rears up like a monster, this really is everything
This is the only world we’ve got, can’t you see?
If there’s another like it, it’s too far to leap
And after all this long history
Are we gonna end it in misery?
People pop up with all sorts of other things to say
It’s just seasonal sunspots and they’re sure to melt away
Everything swirls around in a vortex of denials and facts
And I don’t know how to prove the world’s not flat
But this is the only world we’ve got, don’t you see?
And I ain’t got no science degree
But it can’t be coincidence that all the boffins agree
Somebody please plant a tree for me

It’s easy to live with this idea, it’s always been there. But it’s something in the future, it’s something that, of course, will be addressed. We’ve got governments, there’s no way they’d let this just happen. And then sometimes it just rears up, this is everything. We’ve been part of the most rarified expression of the universe, and we couldn’t look after it.
