And though it means no such place, it’s been glimpsed enough to know just where we mean
It shimmers on the horizon, a golden dream, though somewhere we’ve never been
Don’t lose sight of it
Utopia, Utopia
We missed an important turning along the way, got lost on the wrong road
You’ll hear that that’s just the way it is, you must keep carrying that load
And it spoils the view of Utopia, Utopia, don’t let them spoil the view of
Utopia
Don’t let no one fool you it’s a fairytale
Don’t let no one tell you it’s a wishing well
Don’t let no one tell you it’s a fantasy
It’s as real as light
There was a notion that all could be set free and be what they want to be
The keys were found but were stolen and it was then we fell into a long dream
A nightmare so many have seen
Don’t forget about it, Utopia, Utopia
(keep hold the dream of peace in the world)
Utopia,
(when we see it can’t be sold)
Utopia
(never lose the sight of)
Utopia,

The word literally means nowhere, made up by Thomas More for the title of his 1516 novel. It came to generally mean a place where all of life’s problems had been solved, a place of peace and accord, all ideals realised. It also became a term to laugh away schemes and ideas as being fantastical, unrealistic. It’s been argued that it’s a self-contradictory idea, because people are different and would have different ideas of what Utopia is, But we think we’d all recognise it if we saw it. If we saw a world based on clear and transparent justice, peace would follow. Maybe utopia isn’t so difficult. Believe in ideals, don’t let no one tell you they’re a fairytale, there are reasons why ideals are not realised.
